Zicam (zinc gluconate) is marketed by Matrixx Initiatives, Inc. as a homeopathic means of lessening the duration and severity of symptoms of the common cold. Since Zicam is not a drug, its efficacy as a cold remedy has not been confirmed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration; however, a systematic review of literature, compiled in 2006 on Zicam, found that the therapeutic effectiveness of zinc has yet to be established. The FDA rates zinc as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) when used as a food additive.

Beginning in 2003, a series of users filed suit against Matrixx Initiatives, Inc., claiming that Zicam had negatively affected their senses of smell and taste. Zicam lawyers defended the product’s naturally occurring compounds and neutral pH, but plaintiffs’ counsel claimed that use of the product had created a burning sensation, indicating damage to nasal tissue.

The suits were settled out of court.
