Ritalin
Ritalin (methylphenidate) is a brand of a commonly prescribed stimulant drug used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy in children. It is also used in treating lethargy, depression, neural trauma and obesity. Ritalin use has exploded in recent years as more and more children are diagnosed with attention deficit and hyperactivity-related behavioral disorders.
But even though Ritalin may seem safe, it is currently under investigation by the Food and Drug Administration as a result of its possible side effects:
- Headaches
- sleep disturbances
- abdominal pain
- loss of appetite
- hallucinations
- psychotic behavior
In addition, a relationship may exist between Ritalin and cancer. A recent study found a link between Ritalin use and chromosome damage in 12 children. While far from conclusive, the study strongly suggests that this chromosome damage could result in the development of cancer later in life due to early Ritalin exposure.
